The Avaton Resort is not far away from the little harbour of Ouranoupoli, where a small ship awaits to carry us alongside the coast of the third finger of the peninsula to mount Athos and later back to our origin on Chalcidice.

The ship travels along the west coast, passing numerous monasteries, one more beautiful than the other. We get close enough to recognize many details of the buildings. But if you are in favor to learn more about them, you should head inland to discover that sights that await you around every turn.

Some gulls followed us on our boat trip, while we watched the countless monasteries. Well, it is definitely possible that there are more of these monasteries then places in total on Athos. (Agio Oros) Behind the village of Ouranoupoli the peninsula is separated from the rest of Greece by an administrative border. It forms an autonomous region under the sovereignty of the priests ruling the territory.

A monastic rule says, that for women it is forbidden to enter the monasteries. I am curious if it counts for every monastery, but to the monastery Athos definitely. This rule is set for over a millennium and also counts for animals. (Except cats).

The finding is promulgated in five different languages on a plate and is strictly enforced. Even our ship had to keep a distance of 500 meters to the coastline. This is strangely justified by the love of the Virgin Mary. No one really knows how to explain that case.

The landscape of Chalcidice changes from Mediterranean forests to sheltered bays. The beach is larger then 550 kilometers, got countless bays and offers a big variety of activities for a holiday trip on northern Greece. The peninsula of Kassandra is the westernmost of them all and is known for its simple cottages, modern hotels and nightclubs.

You could discover the middle finger Sithonia with its many hidden beaches and secret corners. If you got a rental car or your got your own it is easier for you to reach those places.

The third finger is the so called peninsula of Athos (Agio Oros). The Avaton Luxury Villas Resort is located on the eastern side near the city Nea Roda. We have written an extra article about it: Avaton Luxury Villas Resort – the sky (Olympus) and Athos so close.

Hiking enthusiasts will find many routes on Kassandra, Sithonia or in the Cholomontas Mountains. Notable archaeological sites in the region include Stageira, the birthplace of Aristotle, and Olynth with its well-preserved mosaics. The easternmost peninsula is the monastic republic of Athos. The area is heavily forested and quite mountainous. The small republic has a thoroughly spiritual and believing character and is almost closed to the outside world. Altogether, about 20 monasteries and several smaller monasteries are distributed mainly along the coast: they are all part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Mount Athos – a holy place

Berg Athos
Mount Athos

The Greek philosophers Aechylus and Homer declared today’s area of mount Athos as the first home of the gods Apollo and Zeus. Many hermits lived in the lonely forests and mountains of Mount Athos long before the birth of Jesus Christ. Mount Athos is 2,033 meters high. Orthodox Christians have made the area their center of orthodoxy in Greece.

Attention women!

We had so many wonderful experiences on our trip, including the boat trip to Mount Athos. On our way alongside the coast to the end of the peninsula, we discovered more than 8 monasteries and ruins along the coast until our return. This tour is very interesting, also the guests on the boat tell their own stories, the monasteries are colorful, the water crystal clear and even the gulls that flew around us, were funny companions. Women can catch a glimpse of the monastic republic of Athos from a distance. Others enjoy the dolphins, who appear by time and accompany the ship for a short distance.

I hope you enjoyed this little insight on Chaicidice. Did you get wanderlust and start liking Chalcidice? If you have any further questions or would like to exercise constructive criticism, we look forward to your comments.
